The Narrow Road to the Deep North
The term ‘war hero’ had always seemed an oxymoron to me. That was until I read Richard Flanagan’s Man Booker Prize- winning book, The Narrow Road To The Deep North.
I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
“And when he looked up, there stood around him a circle of the men he had condemned. He expected the men to curse him… for everyone understood it was to be a death march… One by one, the hundred men shook his hand & thanked him. When it was done, he walked off into the jungle at the side of the parade ground & wept”.
