Afghanistan’s Romeo & Juliet
The story of Zakia and Mohammad Ali has been keenly followed by readers of The New York Times since they were first written about by Rod Nordland in April this year.
The couple are in love but due to their different religious sects and ethnicities, Zakia’s family have disapproved of the union and threatened to kill them both.
Their story has passed through many chapters but I had the privilege of meeting and photographing Zakia in a women’s shelter in Kabul where she had sought refuge after Mohammad Ali (now her husband after they eloped) was captured by her brothers and taken to the police.
