Matthieu Aikins: On Afghanistan
Having made the move to Afghanistan recently, I’ve been reading up as much as I can on the country.
As well as must-reads like Peter Hopkirk’s The Great Game, Steve Coll’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Ghost Wars and the cult classic Flashman by George MacDonald Fraser, there are a handful of modern contemporary writers whose ongoing work is equally captivating.
Matthieu Aikins contributes regularly to the likes of Harpers, The Atlantic and Rolling Stone for whom he wrote a recent piece on a US Special Forces unit accused of war crimes in Wardak Province, just south of Kabul.
For the story – The A-Team Killings, Aikins has since been awarded the Polk Award for Magazine Reporting.
This is just one of several, in-depth reports of Aikins’ over recent years in Afghanistan and the region, all of which I can highly recommend.
