The Forever War
It’s not a recent release but having just read Dexter Filkins‘ The Forever War, a book of observations and experiences from his time spent in Iraq and Afghanistan between 1998 and 2006 for news organisations including The LA Times and The New York Times, it’s well worth noting.
It’s a harrowing page-turner that gave me as good an understanding of the complexities of the two wars as the combined total of everything I’d seen and read prior. It explains everything and nothing all at once.
One of Filkins’ closest colleagues during his near decade long ordeal was Australian photojournalist, Ashley Gilbertson who has featured on In The Loupe several times already. To know some of what Gilbertson experienced during his time in Iraq for The New York Times is both shattering and humbling. It goes a long way to giving those who weren’t there an understanding of what may well be impossible to understand.
An article adapted from the book was published in The New York Times Magazine in August 2008.
The Forever War can be purchased in all good bookstores or via Amazon HERE.
