Robert Capa’s only recorded interview
This is an absolute treat! In the 100th year since Robert Capa was born, the International Centre of Photography has shared a recently discovered radio interview – the only known of with one of photography’s pioneers, Robert Capa.
The husband and wife talk team of Jinx Falkenburg and Tex McCrary interviewed Capa on their NBC Radio program, High Jinx in 1947, at the time Capa’s Book Slightly Out of Focus was published.
It’s a wonderful interview, as much for the quirks of the era (including a hilarious advertisement that was obviously scripted for Falkenburg and McCrary) as for the candid insights of Capa from a time that of less media savvy.
My greatest surprise from the interview, however, were the references to John Steinbeck, the great American Novelist and Nobel Prize winner who Capa had just travelled throughout the former USSR with. The two would later publish A Russian Journal in 1948.
