NY Times Magazine on a refugee boat to Australia
Another comprehensive New York Times Magazine report, this one on a subject close to home for Australians, was published today.
Afghanistan based writer, Luke Mogelson and Dutch photographer Joel Van Houdt arranged the transit with people smugglers in Kabul and Jakarta, posed as Georgian asylum seekers, spent weeks waiting in Jakarta for their boat with the hopes of the refugees in their company being raised and dashed time and time again.
Finally they were taken in the back of a truck to the coast where at 3am they boarded a 30ft boat along with 57 asylum seekers, mostly from Iran.
Not surprisingly, it’s an incredible story and one that I hope makes it on to the computer screens of the Australian politicians who hold the power to change many of these people’s lives.
