After the fiasco surrounding Destination NSW’ decision to ban numerous works from public view during the recent Reportage Festival, its organisers have regrouped and installed an exhibition of many of the banned images in one of Sydney’s premier public spaces – Hyde Park. As well as the printed works, the entire bodies of work will be presented as slideshows inside the shipping containers on which the prints are displayed.
The exhibition is now open and an official opening at 3pm on Saturday afternoon in Hyde Park will include talks by Director of Photography at The Global Mail, Mike Bowers and MP Amanda Fazio who brought the issue to the attention of NSW Parliament.
Reportage has presented the works in an open space as a way of allowing the public to make their own decision and bring to the fore a discussion about what is, or is not, appropriate for public viewing. Reportage has made it clear that they believe it is important for Destination NSW, a statutory authority responsible for some of NSW’s signature cultural events, to hear the public’s feedback.
The exhibition will run until July 3 from 10am – 7pm. For more information see the Reportage website.
