Phillip Adams feat. David Walsh (MONA)
I won’t pretend that I understood all of what they spoke about but one of my favorite Australian radio announcers, Phillip Adams was recently given a guided, after hours tour of The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania by its founder, funder and curator, the eccentric David Walsh. MOMA is undoubtedly the most engaging and tantalising gallery in Australia, if not the world. While state museums are “autocratic”, says Walsh, MONA is “anarchic… We give you the capacity to form your own opinions, we engage in doubt so obviously that it empowers. Because if we don’t know what we’re talking about why should you be worried about being wrong or ill-informed or overstated or even fearful of being right“? To hear the honest and self critical commentaries of its creator implores even the most MONA initiated to dig deeper (again) in order to understand what comes before them.
