Words and Music
Today I flew from Sydney to Broome, WA. It was a dream 6 hour flight. A window to my right and two vacant seats to my left. I had lunch followed by two Mango Weiss bars. I also had 200 pages of Luke Davies’ first novel, Candy, (Allen & Unwin 1997) to read.
Looking for something to overcome the drone of the jet engines I was oblivious to the parallels but somehow drawn to the most recent collaborative album of Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell, Hawk (2010). But it didn’t take long for me to appreciate the symbiosis of the two when played and read together. They complemented each other so brutally, so heart wrenchingly – I read the final pages over and over, Come Undone the soundtrack to the end. It was, in reading and listening terms, a profound experience. I’d call it a recommendation but I’d almost feel guilty putting you through it. aq
