Claire Martin’s “Slab City” at ACP
In March last year I visited Fremantle in Western Australia for the Biannual, FotoFreo Photography Festival. Having come from arguably the birth-place of photojournalism, Paris, there was, amongst a couple of other exhibitions, one in particular that stood out. Claire Martin’s Slab City - a gritty, unflinching, almost grotesque yet intimate portrayal of a fringe community of fugitives, outcasts and and anit-establishmentarians living on an abandoned WWII base in The Colorado Desert in south-eastern California, was the body of work that for one, attracted the attention of Oculi and subsequently saw her become a member. The show now comes to Sydney and The Australian Centre for Photography where it will show from September 1 – 25. Claire will also be doing a floor talk at the gallery from 11am-12 on Saturday the 3rd. I highly recommend checking out this exhibition of perhaps Australia’s greatest, young photographic talent.
